Winter Roof Maintenance: Essential Checklist

Prepare your roof for the winter months with a practical maintenance checklist and professional tips.

Winter rain and wind place extra pressure on roofs, gutters, and drainage systems. A simple inspection before the wettest months can reduce the chance of leaks and help water move safely away from the building.

Clear leaves and debris from gutters, valleys, and downpipes, and confirm that stormwater outlets drain freely. Check from ground level for loose sheets, damaged tiles, lifted flashings, or branches rubbing against the roof.

Inside the roof space, look for damp insulation, staining, mould, or visible daylight. Also check ceilings and exterior walls after heavy rain, as small marks can provide an early warning of a developing leak.

Trim nearby vegetation where safe and make sure roof-mounted equipment and penetrations remain securely sealed. Do not pressure-wash or walk on roofing unless the method is appropriate for the material.

If you find damage or cannot inspect an area safely, arrange a professional assessment. Repairing a localised issue before winter is usually simpler than addressing widespread moisture damage later.
